Dia de la Cultura Cubana

Campaign News | Thursday, 18 October 2012

This is an important day for Cubans living in the UK and abroad to join with friends and family to celebrate our diverse living culture and take pride in being Cuban. Come and celebrate with us!" Roberto Molina, artistic director

On Saturday 20 October in London, Cubans and many friends of Cuba will be celebrating that country's National Day of Culture. At Conway Hall the Fiesta will feature Cuban salsa band Omar Puente and Raíces Cubanas plus other Cuban performers and DJ, with authentic Cuban food and bar.

In Cuba, 20 October marks the day in 1868 when the revolutionary Mambí troops under the leadership of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes set free Bayamo city from Spanish colonial rule and people sang the national anthem, La Bayamesa, for the first time. Legend has it that the melody of La Bayamesa had been composed over a year before to express the unity of national rebellion, but that the lyrics were spontaneously passed on by word of mouth on the day of liberation. Each year now Cubans celebrate all over the island with music and cultural festivities.

Yuri Moreno, Cuban living in UK

'I am so proud of my culture and it is wonderful to share our songs and dance with people in London on our national day of Cuban Culture'

HE Esther Armenteros, Cuban Ambassador

'The Dia de la Cultura concert is a lovely opportunity for Cubans in Britain to gather together, and at the same time to join with friends here in London to celebrate our vibrant culture. Each year gets better and it is always great to meet so many people in such a delicious night.'

Rob Miller, CSC Director

'Each year this event has got bigger and better. It is unique as it brings together Cubans living here with so many UK friends. This year is a great opportunity to celebrate both the success of the 'March for the Future' and the Cuban peoples steadfast defence of their revolution after 50 years of blockade.'
