In Latin America the search for true independence from US & European imperialism has long been associated with a passionate belief in social and economic justice and the quest for an alternative, non-capitalist development model.

Democracy, conceived as popular power, has gone hand in hand with the world view of the native peoples and black communities, and a vision of continental unity derived from historic leaders like Simón Bolívar and the Cuban José Martí.

David Raby, retired professor of Latin American History at Toronto & Liverpool and Green Party City Councillor, will discuss the Latin American example and its relevance for us in the UK.
