CineCuba Film Screenings - January - March 2019
Monday, 28 January 2019, 7:30pm
Monday 28 January, 7.30pm. CineCuba Screening: Maestra (2012) dir. Catherine Murphy. The 1961 Cuban Literacy Campaign dramatically changed Cuba’s literacy levels in one year, with over 100,000 volunteers, over half of who were women, teaching in rural areas of Cuba. We are showing this film as a tribute to the 60th anniversary of the Revolution, encompassing, as it does, so many aspects of progress. We hope to have a speaker from the NEU Cuban Education delegation to speak.
Monday 25 February, 7.30pm. CineCuba Screening: ‘Amada’ (1984) dir. Nelson Rodriguez/Humberto Solás. In 1914, during World War I, Amada, a bourgeois wife, falls in love with her cousin Marcial, a young idealist who is fighting against the US controlled Cuban regime in power.
Monday 25 March, 7.30pm. CineCuba Screening: ‘Noticiero ICAIC: History through Cuban eyes: (1960-1990)’. This Al Jazeera production revisits the original footage with commentary from some of those involved. The weekly news programme covering major local and global events would be shown in cinemas all over the island.
Venue: upstairs at The Calthorpe Arms, 252 Grays Inn Rd, WC1X 8JR. Free entry, donations welcome. Hosted by CSC North London. Contact email@example.com
