Derbyshire Cuba Network: Education under the US Blockade
Derby
Monday, 9 December 2024, 6:30pm
Derby teacher Sara Wroe reports back from the recent NEU mission to Cuba delivering aid and learning from Cuban educators.
The US is waging a war in the Caribbean – one that targets the old, the infirm and children. It continues to maintain its 62 year illegal blockade despite annual UN general assembly votes calling for its end, with only the US and Israel in opposition. In spite of this democracy thrives in Cuban schools through genuine student participation playing powerful and meaningful roles in decision making. NEU delegates noted how Cubans achieve so much with so little and who say “Solidarity isn’t giving away what you have left, it is sharing what you have”.
The evening will be an opportunity to hear about Sara’s experience of Cuba’s education system and society. There will be a buffet and also an opportunity to raise funds for CUBA VIVE a medical appeal to send life saving machines, surgical and other vital medical aid.
