About the film
El Mayor / The Major (2020, Rigoberto Lopez, Cuba, 1h 53m, english subtitles)
An epic tale of love, liberty and revolution, inspired by the life of Major General Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz (1841-1873, who led the Mambi army in the Camagüey region of central Cuba against Spanish colonialrule. He was defined by his loyalty to the revolution and to his comrades-in-arms, alongside his love for his wife Amalia. The film delves into events that forged the Cuban nation.
Cuba's National day of Culture, celebrated every 20 October, marks the day in 1868 when, following the capture of the city of Bayamo by independence forces, the Cuban people first sang the national anthem, ‘La Bayamesa’, a foundational act of Cuba’s national identity.
The event is organised by the Cuban Embassy, in collaboration with Screen Cuba and ICAIC, the Cuban film institute.
