Nearly 900,000 university students have graduated in Cuba since the 1959 triumph of the Revolution, said Deputy Minister Higher Education Juan Jose Cabello, during a meeting in the central province of Cienfuegos.

Cabello, who presided over the graduation ceremony of the Carlos Rafael Rodriguez University of Cienfuegos, said numbers greatly increased thanks to graduates from the new municipality-based university faculties throughout the country.

The deputy minister said 2,800 graduates this year came from this government initiative started a few years ago to take higher education studies to the communities.

Some 457 students received their university degrees this year at the University of Cienfuegos.

Present at the ceremony were local political leaders, Jose Ramon Monteagudo, first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party; and Rolando Diaz Gonzalez, President of the Provincial People's Power Assembly.
