An exciting opportunity to work and live in Cuba has arisen with Granma International.
The weekly english language newspaper is looking for a translator to start as soon as possible.
Granma International Translator - job description and application process
The basic work of our three-person team consists of translating articles into English from Spanish for the weekly printed edition of the paper (16 pages), as well as prioritised daily news items for the website. We are also responsible for some page lay-out tasks in conjunction with the design department.
There are five essential requirements for the job:
- A strong commitment to our mission to share Cuba’s reality internationally
- The ability to translate from Spanish to English with speed and accuracy
- The ability to communicate in written English at a university level
- A basic understanding of Cuba's society, economic model, history, and culture
- A willingness to learn and function as part of a team
This is not intended to sound daunting, as there is plenty of cooperation within the department, along with the awareness that individuals have distinct strengths.
The work week is Monday through Friday, approximately 8am-4pm. Extra hours and weekends are sometimes necessary, in the event of breaking news.
The monthly salary is 400 CUP and 120 CUC.
Basic furnished housing is provided, with all utilities paid.
Vacation consists of 30 paid days per year, to be scheduled in conjunction with the team. Granma covers the cost of one round trip flight to the translator’s native country, every two years.
Granma takes responsibility for processing the translator's visa, work permit, and status as a temporary resident.
Applicants are asked to translate 1-3 articles as a skills test. Dictionaries and other references may be used, but it is assumed that the work will be the applicant’s alone, not proofread or edited by anyone else.
Also requested are:
- A brief essay (1 page) explaining why you are interested in the position
- A basic resume including work and other relevant activities such as travel, solidarity work, etc
- Copies of diplomas/transcripts (if applicable)
- Two references
