Roger McKenzie, UNISON Assistant General Secretary, chaired the CSC fringe meeting at the TUC Black Workers conference in April which took place shortly after the Trump administration had announced measures to tighten the blockade. Updating delegates on the new measures, he reminded them that despite their challenges the Cuban people have made many huge achievements, including their legendary internationalism.

“Wherever there is a natural disaster, the Cubans are there first.

“And we must always remember the critical role that Cuba played in the ending of apartheid in South Africa,” he said.

Carol Jumpp-Graham and Camille London-Miyo reported back from the NEU’s October half-term delegation to Cuba.

Carol focused on her visits to the SNTECD (Cuban Teachers’ Union) and the CTC, and explained the key role that Cuban unions play in education, politics and society.

Camile spoke of the passion for education that Cuban children have, especially the fact that music, art and drama were highly valued, and the active role teachers and students played in creating education policy.

CSC would like to thank Thompsons Solicitors for providing the meeting room and sponsoring the fringe meeting.
