Part of a huge consignment of educational aid for Cuba left the Cuba Solidarity Campaign's office at Unite's London and Eastern headquarters on 21 April.

CSC staff and executive members were joined by Cuban Ambassador Barbara Montalvo and embassy staff, together with Peter Kavanagh, Unite Regional Secretary.

A truck was loaded with 100,000 exercise books, half a million pens and pencils, musical instruments, craft materials and thousands of pairs of ballet shoes donated by the Royal ballet which were being stored at the union's London offices.

The Viva la Educacion appeal has raised over £100,000 to send two 40ft shipping containers full of educational aid for Cuban schools. The items will be shipped later this month and arrive in Cuba in late May.

Speaking at the send off from the CSC offices, the Cuban Ambassador thanked everyone who contributed to the appeal which she said had "helped break the blockade and supported wonderful students and teachers across the island."
