“This is your home too” – new ambassador hosts ‘Friends’ reception
Campaign News | Thursday, 20 June 2024
Hosting her first Friends of Cuba Solidarity Campaign reception on Monday 3 June at her London residence, the Cuban Ambassador, Her Excellency Ismara Mercedes Vargas Walter, took the opportunity to thank ‘Friends’ from across the country for standing “side by side” with her nation.
The annual reception is hosted to thank regular donors for their support for Cuba and CSC. Joining them were figures from across the British trade union movement, including Emma Rose (NEU President), Barbara Plant (GMB President), Alex Gordon, (RMT President) Kevan Nelson (UNISON Assistant General Secretary) and Gawain Little (GFTU General Secretary).
The Ambassador welcomed guests to her new home with mojitos and Cuban music. Although she has only been based at the residence for a few months since arriving in London in early 2024, she told them “as friends of Cuba, this is your home too.”
On behalf of CSC, Chair Kevin Courtney thanked the Ambassador and Cuban embassy staff for their hospitality, and the people of Cuba, for “their Revolution, for their internationalism, for their steadfastness in the face of aggression and for the inspiration they’ve provided to millions around the world.”
CSC Director Rob Miller said donations from ‘Friends’ were vital to ensure the long-term future of CSC and encouraged everyone to support the Cuba Vive Medical Aid Appeal.
Friends of CSC contribute £200 per year to support the long-term work of the Campaign, directly helping our efforts to defend Cuba’s sovereignty and campaign against the illegal US blockade.
