Earlier this year Cuba announced that they would be organising activities throughout 2026 to mark the centenary of the birth of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, under the banner 100 Years with Fidel. Fidel’s 100th birthday would have been on 13 August 2026 and the tenth anniversary of his passing is 25 November 2026.
As part of the commemorations, the Cuba Solidarity Campaign is organising several events, including inviting Fidel’s grandson, Fidel Antonio Castro Smirnov, to speak at the Latin America Conference in London and other regional meetings in February.
Fidel Antonio is a professor at University of Havana and a leading academic and advocate for Cuba’s internationalism and sustainable development. The visit will be one of the highlights of the centenary year in the UK, which will reflect on and celebrate Fidel’s enduring legacy — from Cuba’s achievements in health, education, and supporting anti-colonial liberation movements, to its ongoing resistance to over 60 years of US blockade.
Aside from the Latin America Conference, CSC will mark 100 Years with Fidel in the UK with a series of events including lectures, film screenings, and educational activities celebrating Fidel Castro’s contribution to the global struggles for justice, sovereignty, and socialism.
CSC Director Rob Miller said: “Fidel Castro remains one of the most significant and inspirational figures of the 20th century. His ideas and example continue to inspire people around the world who believe in equality, internationalism, and the right of nations to determine their own futures. We’re honoured to welcome Fidel Antonio Castro Smirnov to London as we mark this important anniversary.”
Writing on the fifth anniversary of his grandfather’s passing, Castro Smirnov said: “Fidel did not let Martí die. Those of us who shared Fidel's time, those of us who are grateful, those of us who carry his hopes and dreams of justice as our DNA, cannot let the Revolution die. And in that battle, history will undoubtedly absolve us. Fidel's teachings are in every heroic and supportive act of this people who know freedom and resistance, and who today strive to further advance his great work.”
Aside from Castro Smirnov, other speakers at the Latin America Conference include Jeremy Corbyn MP; HE Ismara Vargas Walter, Cuban Ambassador; Richard Burgon MP; Maryam Eslamdoust, General Secretary TSSA; Felix Plasencia, Venezuelan Ambassador; John McDonnell MP; Chris Hazzard MP; Sarah Woolley, General Secretary BFAWU; Lindsey German, Stop the War: James Schneider, Progressive International; and Sarah Kilpatrick, NEU Deputy General Secretary.
One year after the inauguration of Trump, we are seeing an emboldened United States flexing its military and economic muscle across the globe. For the people of Latin America the challenges are extreme, yet their battle to break free from the chains of US dominance continues. The prize is independence and sovereignty, free from external interference and aggression. People across Britain and Europe must develop a solidarity that makes a difference. The annual Latin America Conference is central to this process, and we hope you will join us to share your understanding and experience.
Information about 100 Years with Fidel and forthcoming events will be posted here as it is confirmed.
