Hurricane Melissa
The Cuba Solidarity Campaign has taken the decision to immediately donate £50,000 to Cuba’s relief effort to help with recovery following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa.
The funds are available as part of the CSC Cuba Vive appeal, which has been fundraising for much needed medical aid for the island. The donation will be used by the Cuban authorities to immediately help with humanitarian priorities in the provinces most affected, including much needed medical assistance.
CSC has also launched a Hurricane Melissa relief appeal. Those wishing to donate can do so via the details at the bottom of this page.
CSC Chairperson Kevin Courtney is currently in Cuba with a delegation of 20 teachers from the National Education Union. He said:
“We are in the west of Cuba, several hundred miles from Hurricane Melissa, but all the Cubans we are talking to are worried about the effects of the hurricane on their compatriots. They are proud of the well-practiced evacuation routines that will hopefully minimise deaths and serious injuries. But they also know recovery will be long and hard, all the more so because of the illegal US blockade.
But the Cubans will mobilise. They have a saying: ‘Solidarity is sharing what you have, not what you have left over’ and plans are already well advanced for doing that inside Cuba and for medical teams to help in Jamaica.”
CSC sends its solidarity to the Cuban people as they work together to rebuild their communities. We call once again for the US government to end its inhumane blockade of the country so that the Cuban people can access the building materials and equipment they will need to recover from this disaster.
