UNISON, Britains largest public services union, has launched an appeal to its members, branches and regions to fundraise for a container of food aid to Cuba.
Ronan Ogilvy, international relations officer for UNISON Perth and Kinross, said: “I am inspired by Cuba’s solidarity and internationalism. Despite their own challenges, the Cuban model of public service knows no borders, and it should inspire us in Britain. After decades of sending aid around the world, Cuba desperately needs us to return the favour.”
UNISON assistant general secretary Liz Snape added: “After recently meeting the Cuban Ambassador to the UK, one thing is clear – US pressure is hurting ordinary people. Babies delivered by phone torch. Food shortages intensifying. The Cuban people need our solidarity, now more than ever.”
UNISON regions, branches and members can donate to the container via the usual donation methods. Just remember to mark your donation ‘UNISON’ so we can keep a record of how much has been raised for the UNISON-sponsored container.
