Havana denounces oil blockade and expanded sanctions amid ongoing tensions.

On 5 April, Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister Bruno Rodriguez described Washington’s latest executive orders imposing measures against his nation as international crimes and genocidal.

“The U.S. government insists on proposing to act militarily against Cuba because ‘the country is devastated… and it would be an honor to liberate it’,” he said, recalling an unfounded phrase spoken by U.S. President Donald Trump.

“What is cynical and hypocritical is that the United States has spent decades trying to devastate the country with an economic war, and this administration has done so with even greater zeal in recent months with two genocidal executive orders.”

“Both the economic and energy blockade, and the new extraterritorial coercive measures; as well as the threat of military aggression and aggression itself are international crimes,” Rodriguez stressed.

On May 1, Trump signed a new executive order that extends the scope of sanctions to cover almost any non-U.S. person or company that has commercial relations with Cuba, especially in the energy, defense, security, and financial sectors.

This measure adds to the oil blockade on the island, which combines a January executive order that threatens tariffs on those who supply crude to Cuba.

The United States seeks to compel Cuba to negotiate reforms in its economic and political systems, but the Revolutionary government has reiterated that both areas are not subject to discussion as they are sovereign, internal matters. Both sides have acknowledged talks, but so far the topics or progress in this dialogue have not been made public.
