ALPHA KANE: A committed internationalist and valued friend

On behalf of the Executive Committee of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and all our members and affiliates, we would like to offer our deepest sympathy to Alpha’s wife Jenny, his family, colleagues and many friends.
We are all deeply saddened by this loss. Alpha has been a very long term supporter of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and was a member of the CSC Executive Committee for a number of years.
Alpha was profoundly committed to the defence of Cuba and its revolution and had visited the island many times. He worked tirelessly campaigning in support of Cuba and against the illegal US Blockade. He was working on a PhD studying the impact of the Cuban Literacy Campaign which eradicated illiteracy on the island. His work would undoubtedly have thrown a light on the Literacy Campaign and the importance of culture to the Cuban Revolution. His love for Cuba was based on his deep political commitment and his love for the Cuban people. He had many friends both here and in Cuba who loved him and valued his friendship.
He was a member of the National Education Union and encouraged union members in their support for Cuba winning countless friends in the NEU and in the Cuban teachers union. Messages of condolences have been sent by Nayda Elisa Dias Luiz, the General Secretary of the SNTECD (the Cuban educators union) and Niurka Gonzalez, the former General Secretary together with a host of others.
Cuban friends who were working with him on his PhD have also expressed their condolences. Everywhere he went he made friends, always engaging positively with everyone he met. Everyone who knew him held him in the highest regard.
He was a committed internationalist who never erred from showing his support for the people of Cuba. His enthusiasm for celebrating their achievements and struggle against the US Blockade and for Cuba’s sovereignty helped us all in our efforts to develop and strengthen the bonds of friendship and international solidarity between the people of the UK and Cuba.
From his birthplace of Senegal, to the Sorbonne in Paris, and his journey to London where he taught, he carried the Cuban flag high.
Alpha will be greatly missed by many people here and in Cuba. We have lost a true and committed friend.
