Nobel Prize Winner, Harold Pinter, has signed an international open letter calling for the trial of terrorist Luis Posada Carriles who was released from a US jail on bail on Friday 20 April.
The call for signatures comes from the Defense of Humanity Network who have issued the following statement and launched a website where you can find out more information and add your name at http://www.porlajusticia.cu/
The Fight for Justice website statement reads:
Luis Posada Carriles must be tried for his crimes
While hundreds of thousands have died in Iraq and Afghanistan in the name of the struggle against terrorism, and others - arbitrarily detained - are tortured in Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo, a judge in El Paso , Texas has announced that she will set a known criminal free on bail.
Luis Posada Carriles was tried and found guilty in Venezuela en 1976 for bombing a civilian aircraft where seventy-three people died. Posada Carriles escaped from Venezuelan prison in 1982, and went to work for the CIA in the Iran-Contra Operation and the implementation of Plan Condor. In 1997, he masterminded a series of terrorist attacks targeting tourist hotels in Havana . One of those attacks killed young Italian tourist Fabio Di Celmo. In 2000, he planned an attempted assassination against president Fidel Castro during a visit to the University of Panama
In February of 2005, Posada Carriles illegally entered the United States . Only after repeated public outcry revealed the presence of this criminal on US territory that the government of George W. Bush detained him for migratory infractions and false witness, without the slightest allusion to terrorism.
The treatment afforded Posada Carriles by the US authorities, pressured by extremist Cuban organizations operating from South Florida, clearly demonstrate the double standard of the War on Terror in the name of which they torture, kidnap and bomb, while, as denounced by numerous international forums and organizations of the United Nations, five Cuban antiterrorists are illegally incarcerated in the United States without access to a fair trial.
The honest people of the world raise their voice against war and terrorism, and now have before them irrefutable proof of the lack of ethical on which the current administration in Washington bases its actions. We, the undersigned, demand that the government of the United States , in compliance with international obligations, charge Luis Posada Carriles for all of his crimes, or fulfill the request for his extradition to Venezuela , which up to now has received absolutely no response.
