Tour aimed at young trade unionists
Young Persons’ International May Day Brigade 2008
The Cuba Solidarity Campaign is running it’s first Cuban tour aimed at young trade unionists, in April 2008.
The Young Persons’ International May Day Brigade is a 15-day tour which will provide delegates with a unique opportunity to see the real revolutionary Cuba, away from the usual tourist trail, experience Cuba’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, and to provide meaningful solidarity and support to the Cuban people.
It will also enable members from across the trade union movement to meet at a national and international level.
So far delegates are being sent by: UNISON, UNITE, GMB and CWU, and strong interest has also been shown by a number of trade unions.
The tour will include a special invitation to attend Cuba’s May Day Rally in Plaza de la Revolución, Havana, and the chance to meet with activists from across the globe at a series of international events.
The tour’s aim is to strengthen links with sister trade unions and the CTC (Central Organisation of Cuban Trade Unions) in Cuba and participate in a series of related professional visits to workplaces, schools, institutions and neighbourhoods.
Delegates will also gain a valuable insight into the continuing achievements of the Cuban Revolution and present day Cuban society, examine the challenges facing the island, as well as witness firsthand the problems caused by the US trade blockade and meet and discuss current issues with Cuban workers in their workplaces and neighbourhoods.
Participants will contribute to the agricultural and productive development of the country through voluntary work sessions, in places such as orange groves or arable farmland. The whole stay comprises 15 days and 14 nights, 11 of which will be spent in the “Julio Antonio Mella” International Camp, which is located in Caimito Municipality, 30 miles from Havana. The rest of the trip will be spent in Varadero, Matanzas Province.
The full cost of the tour will be around £900, and it will depart towards the end of April.
