Cuba’s Dayron Robles Wins Gold

HAVANA TIMES, March 14 - Cuba’s hurdles champion Dayon Robles set a new record (indoors) for the 60-meter hurdles in World Athletics Championships on Sunday to win the gold medal at Doha 2010.

Robles time of 7.34 seconds edged US runner Terrence Trammel (7.36) who led the race until the final strides. David Oliver, also from the US finished third with a 7.44 time.

In other competitions Cubans Yoandri Betanzos (17.69) and Arnie David Giralt (17.36) finished second and third in the triple jump event behind Teddy Tamgho of France who set a new world record of 17.90.

Cuba led the Latin American and Caribbean teams at the athletics championships finishing in sixth place with one gold, three silver and one bronze medal. Brazil and Jamaica were tied for eighth with 1-0-1 and Bahamas tenth with 1-0-0.

The United States was first with 8-3-6, far ahead of second place Ethiopia 3-0-2 and Russia 2-4-3.
