Cubans vote in municipal elections

News from Cuba | Monday, 28 November 2022

Cubans went to the polls on Sunday 27 November in the first round of elections for members of the Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power, the main bodies of local government in Cuba.

Preliminary results announced by the National Electoral Council (CEN) show that 68% of eligible voters (5,728,000) had taken part. 23,480 polling stations across the country opened at 7am and, while they were scheduled to close at 6pm, the CEN extended the voting hours to 7pm to allow a greater number of citizens to exercise their right to vote.

In the month between 21 October and 18 November more than 6 million Cubans attended neighbourhood assemblies to nominate candidates and, according to the CEN, a total of 26,476 people put themselves forward as candidates in 12,427 constituencies.

In order to be elected, a candidate must receive more than 50 per cent of the votes in the first round. 11,502 constituency delegates managed to secure a majority in the first round, meaning a second round will take place on 4 December in the remaining constituencies.
