An emergency shipment of humanitarian aid is being sent to Cuba following donations to the Cuba Solidarity Campaign’s (CSC) Hurricane Melissa Relief Appeal.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters, CSC has raised £71,500 to purchase 23 tonnes of powdered milk, which is now en route to the island. The shipment will provide essential nutrition for children, pregnant women and elderly people—those most at risk of food shortages in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, which tore through Cuba’s eastern provinces on Wednesday 29 October, bringing winds of up to 120 miles per hour and causing widespread damage to homes, infrastructure and agriculture.

Welcoming the donation, Ismara Vargas Walter, Cuban Ambassador to the UK, said:

“This generous donation from the Cuba Solidarity Campaign comes at a critical moment for our country. As we work to recover from the hurricane’s devastation in the eastern provinces, this container of milk powder will provide essential nutrition specifically to our children, pregnant women and the elderly. This aid is a vital lifeline that breaks through the suffocating constraints of the ruthless US blockade, ensuring our most vulnerable citizens are not left behind. It stands as a tangible example of the deep bonds of friendship between the British people and Cuba.”

In response to the scale of the humanitarian emergency, CSC took the decision to redirect £50,000 from its Cuba Vive Medical Aid Appeal to support hurricane relief efforts aimed at saving lives and protecting vulnerable communities. A further £21,500 was raised directly through public donations to CSC’s Hurricane Melissa Appeal, demonstrating strong solidarity from across the UK.

The powdered milk will be distributed through Cuba’s public health and social care systems, helping to stabilise nutrition at a time when food supplies have been severely disrupted by storm damage and ongoing economic pressures.

The Hurricane Melissa Relief Appeal remains open, with additional humanitarian shipments planned as further funds are collected. Please donate to ensure sustained assistance reaches those most affected as Cuba continues its recovery.
