Early Day Motion 176
Early Day Motion 176
Signed by 104 MPs as of 11th September 2003
CUBAN MIAMI FIVE
That this House expresses concern at the trial and detention in the United States of America of Cuban nationals Antonio Guerrero Rodriguez, Fernando Gonzalez Llort, Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo, Ramon Labanino Salazar and Rene Gonzalez Sehwerert, known as the Miami Five; finds that the nature of the charges, the location of the trial in Miami Florida in an atmosphere of media and public intimidation and the length of the sentences subsequently handed down, call into question the safety of the judicial process; notes the denial of entry to the immediate families to visit the detainees in the United States of America; and calls on the United States Government to support the petition for a retrial and ensure that it is held in a jurisdiction that guarantees a fair trial.

· What is an EDM?
Early Day Motions are a useful parliamentary device to publicise the extent of support among MPs for a particular issue and they often generate national or local media interest. It is vital for the “Free the Miami Five” campaign is able to capitalise on this exposure and extend parliamentary support for the EDM – In short we need to lobby as many MPs as possible to sign.
· What can I do?
Write to your local MP today! You can apply pressure on him/her to sign the EDM by sending a well-worded letter, as a “concerned constituent”. Lobbying packs, including a “template” letter and full details of the EDM are currently available from the CSC office and can be obtained electronically by e-mail to campaigns@cuba-solidarity.org.uk, or by sending an SAE to:
