María Eugenia (Maruchi) Guerrero and Mirta Rodriguez, sister and mother of Antonio Guerrero arrived in Britain this morning (19 April) to take part in a major exhibition of Cuban and international art in support of the campaign for Justice for the Miami Five.

Welcoming the exhibition, they said:

“It is very important that we are here to take part in this exhibition to share the paintings of Toni and the cartoons of Gerardo, and the work of other Cuban and international artists.”

“We believe that through art people can understand the human courage of these five men imprisoned in the US for almost fourteen years.”

“In spite of this injustice, through their art they have been able to express their love of their country, their family and friends and feelings of peace and hope."

“We thank the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and all the friends who made this exhibition possible and the strength of their support in the fight for justice and freedom for the Five."

“We also have hope for the important events taking place at this moment in Washington involving friends from cities all over the the US, Canada and other countries.”

Mirta and Maruchi will be at private views at the gallery all week, and participate in trade union events including fringe meetings at the CWU Conference in Bournemouth and the TUC Black Workers Conference in London.

Beyond the Frame features the cartoons and paintings of Miami Five prisoners Antonio Guerrero and Gerardo Hernandez, together with 26 renowned Cuban and 20 international artists. Much of the work has been donated by the artists and will be on sale to raise funds for the campaign for freedom of the Miami Five.

Special private views and receptions will take place on the evenings of Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 April for trade union and Cuba Solidarity Campaign supporters. Please contact CSC on 020 8800 0155 or email office@cuba-solidarity.org.uk for details on how to attend these events.
