The Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) and its supporters joined nearly 2,000 others gathered outside Downing Street in London on Monday evening to protest against the US attack on Venezuela, the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores and wider US aggression against Latin America.
CSC chair Kevin Courtney told the crowd that with the naked aggression on display from the White House, “Trump makes clear what US imperialism has tried to hide.” Kevin marked the deaths of 32 Cubans in Venezuela and noted that there are currently around 3,000 Cubans in Venezuela, the vast majority of whom are doctors. “Cuba and Venezuela are sister countries, they support one another”, Kevin said. “Cuba and Venezuela both face attacks and I’m calling on you to rally to Venezuela and to rally to Cuba. If this is allowed to stand it’s not just Venezuela, it’s Colombia, it’s Cuba, it’s Greenland. Hands off Venezuela, hands off Cuba.”
Jeremy Corbyn MP placed the attack in the context of the US’s new National Security Strategy, which set out the aim of reasserting US hegemony in the Americas. “It’s our job to stand in solidarity with the people of Latin America who are opposed to this, who want to be able to conduct their own affairs.” Jeremy sent solidarity to the people of Cuba, “who are very frightened about what might happen next.”
Recalling the long history of US intervention in Latin America, convenor of Stop the War Lindsey German said “when we hear of attacks on Cuba, on Colombia, on Mexico, we have to say no.” Referring to the 32 Cuban nationals killed in the attack on Venezuela, she asked “if he can do that so brazenly, what else will he do? What other countries will he attack?”
Other speakers included Richard Burgon MP, Zoe Garbett of the Green Party, NEU General Secretary Daniel Kebede, RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey, CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt and Clauida Turbet-Delof.
In response to the US attack and kidnapping of Maduro, the TUC and a number of British trade unions, including RMT, NEU, UNISON, GMB and Unite, released statements condemning the attacks and urging the British government to denounce President Trump's actions.
