MPs write to Keir Starmer demanding clarity on Cuba position
Campaign News | Friday, 9 January 2026
Members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Cuba have written to Prime Minister Keir Starmer demanding the government explicitly rules out support for any bombardment or abduction of leadership in Cuba.
On January 5th, the Prime Minister refused to condemn potential US military action against Cuba, mirroring the recent events in Venezuela. "For a Prime Minister who has built a career on the primacy of the rule of law, this ambiguity is unacceptable", the letter states.
26 officers and members of the APPG asked the Prime Minister for direct clarification on:
- If the government recognises the US military action in Venezuela as a violation of the UN Charter; and
- Whether he will explicitly rule out UK support or acquiescence for a similar military assault on Cuba
Steve Witherden MP, chair of the APPG, said: "I wrote to Downing Street alongside 25 other MPs and Peers to state clearly: these are not just political disagreements; they are illegal acts of aggression. By failing to set a red line, the UK risks emboldening further escalation."
Responding to a written question by Nav Mishra MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign Office Chris Elmore reaffirmed the government's position that, "consistent with the UN Charter, the UK recognises the principle of the sovereign equality of all UN Member States, including Cuba."
In response to the US's attack on Venezuela, and open threats against Cuba, CSC will shortly launch a Call for Peace and Soveriegnty, urging the UK government and international community to uphold international law and oppose any threat of military intervention against Cuba and Latin America.
