Parliamentarians and Trade Union Leaders Say No to Trump's War on Cuba

MPs, trade unionists and campaigners outside Parliament on Wednesday 3 June
British MPs, peers and trade union leaders gathered outside Parliament today to call on the UK Government to oppose the Trump administration's escalating aggression against Cuba and reject any threat of military intervention against the island.
The photo call, organised by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign, comes amid growing concern over the intensification of US economic warfare against Cuba and increasingly hostile rhetoric from Washington.
Cuba is already facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with shortages of food, fuel and medicines exacerbated by the US blockade and new sanctions designed to cut off the island's energy supplies. The measures have deepened hardship across the country and raised fears of further escalation.
Participants gathered beneath a giant banner reading "No Trump War on Cuba" and called on the British Government to publicly oppose US aggression, defend international law and support Cuba's right to self-determination.
The demonstration follows growing parliamentary opposition to US policy. A total of 117 MPs have signed Early Day Motion 2739, "New Sanctions on Cuba", which calls on the UK Government to uphold international law and oppose the Trump administration's latest sanctions against the island. Seventeen senior trade union leaders have also signed an open letter warning of a “dangerous escalation” in US hostility and expresses solidarity with the Cuban people and Cuban trade unions at a moment of mounting crisis.
Speaking at this morning, Jeremy Corbyn MP said:
"The sanctions against Cuba are disgusting and disgraceful. Oil must be delivered, medicines must be delivered, and these sanctions must end. The people of Cuba should be allowed to live their own lives and determine their own future – not Donald Trump."
Clive Lewis MP said:
"I stand in support and solidarity with the Cuban people. Half of my family are from Grenada, and we know from our own history the reality of US intervention and oppression in the Caribbean. We understand the implications and the consequences of this kind of action."
Ian Byrne MP said:
"My message to the Cuban people is that there are many MPs in Parliament who fully support your efforts and have got your backs."
Richard Burgon MP said:
"One hundred and seventeen Members of Parliament have signed a parliamentary motion rejecting Trump's appalling new sanctions on Cuba. Outside Parliament today, MPs from different parties have come together in large numbers with a clear message: No to Trump's war on Cuba, and yes to the right of the Cuban people to determine their own future."
